Rangers made superb last-gasp Oscar Cortes decision as honour clinched v Ayr United

Rangers were busy in the January transfer window, with Mohammed Diomande, Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes moving to Ibrox.

All three have joined on loan, and all three look certain to play key roles under Philippe Clement for the remainder of the season.

The man in the dugout handed new winger Cortes his first start for the club against Ayr United on Saturday (10 February), and the attacker certainly didn’t disappoint.

The 20-year-old needed just 10 minutes to make an impact, with the forward finding left-back Borna Barisic for the opening goal.

Silva secured the victory in the Scottish Cup fifth round clash in the second half, but it was Cortes who gained much of the plaudits, with the winger named as the Player of the Match [official Rangers X account, 10 February].

The performance and award should do wonders for his confidence at Ibrox, not that he is light in that area. It may also give Clement an easy decision to make come summer time, with Rangers having the option to buy Cortes at the end of his loan deal [Sky Sports, 1 February].

It was a last-gasp decision to bring the youngster to Ibrox, with Cortes having joined temporarily from RC Lens on deadline day.

But it looks to be a superb decision from the Scottish giants, who are now into the next round of the Scottish Cup thanks to Cortes’ starring role at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement’s new-look Rangers squad is already beginning to take shape this summer.

As proven by a handful of last summer’s signings, not every player has hit the ground running at Ibrox, but their new winger certainly has.
