Philippe Clement puts Rangers board back in their box after ‘moronic’ Ibrox events – Keown

Philippe Clement has put the Ibrox board back in their box after “moronic” suggestions that Willie Collum should be banned from refereeing Rangers matches, according to Gary Keown.

The Rangers board had voiced their frustration with the SFA official following December’s Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic, where Collum was on VAR duty and failed to award a penalty for a blatant handball from Brendan Rodgers’ side.

As a result, the Ibrox board are understood to have asked that Collum be banned from refereeing their games, a decision which Clement has said that he is against, much to Scottish Daily Mail journalist Keown’s delight.

Writing in the Scottish Daily Mail on Sunday (11 February, page 96) he said: “Thirty-two seconds it took Philippe Clement to put the Ibrox board back in their box on Friday – and show why he is exactly the kind of figurehead Rangers need as they continue to try to get themselves back to a position of strength.

“On Friday, in the space of a few short questions and sparse answers in his pre-Ayr United press conference, he confirmed beyond question that he is the front-facing voice of sanity that Rangers have lacked for so long by exposing the moronic nature of the boardroom’s calls for Willie Collum to be banned from refereeing their matches.”

Philippe Clement Rangers ‘voice of sanity’ in Ibrox chaos

There was a feeling during Michael Beale’s tenure of complete chaos at Ibrox, with a manager and board that were working against one another to little avail. That has completely changed since Clement arrived in Glasgow.

The Belgian has not been afraid to voice his opinions on important matters, whether that be the sheer amount of players expected to leave on free transfers this summer or the sheer volume of injuries currently throughout the playing squad.

Clement certainly isn’t a yes man and that is exactly what the Rangers board need at the moment to hold them to account. The club needed a revolution and a reset after Beale’s sacking and they have got exactly that in their new manager.

However, the Ibrox board do deserve credit for taking their time to discover the perfect candidate in Clement. He appears to be the perfect fit for the Gers currently and those in charge in Glasgow couldn’t have appointed a better manager.
