Rangers board praised for October decision amid ‘huge ramifications’ verdict

Rangers’ board have been praised for their decision to appoint Steven Davis as interim manager by Barry Ferguson, but the former Gers star has admitted any slip-up now could have “huge ramifications”.

The Light Blues have gone from strength to strength since Philippe Clement arrived at Ibrox, losing only once in the league to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table, but the Gers took their time to appoint the Belgian with Davis holding the fort on an interim basis.

Clement’s side are well and truly in the title race now and while Ferguson admits he has been impressed by the Belgian, he does think it will go down to the wire and any defeat could have a big impact on who wins the Premiership title.

Writing for the Daily Record on Friday (9 February) he said: “I think the Ibrox board deserve credit. They could have rushed into an appointment and compounded one bad move in giving the gig to Beale with another.

“But this time they bought themselves a bit of time by bringing Steven Davis and Alex Rae in as caretakers and used the October international to do their homework on Philippe Clement. And so far, it’s paying off.

“Rangers are right back in this title race but the reality of that is the mental pressure pressing down on the team is only going to multiply. Any slip-up from this point on now has huge ramifications and you just don’t know how that will affect the team’s new-found confidence.

“I really think this race is going to go down to the wire and it’s going to be about who can hold their nerve, who can be the most consistent.”

Ibrox board have managed a Rangers masterstroke with Philippe Clement

When Clement arrived in Glasgow, most Rangers supporters had already given up on the Premiership title and were instead just hoping that the Belgian would be able to lift the ViaPlay Cup to ensure it wasn’t another trophyless season.

However, the Ibrox board have managed to transform the entirety of the club with the appointment of Clement and they deserve credit for taking their time with the Davis call, rather than making the knee-jerk appointment of somebody like John Eustace

Nothing has been decided in the league yet though and there is still plenty of football to be played this season before anybody will lift the Premiership title. Rangers may have momentum, but that can change at the drop of the hat.

Hopefully, the Light Blues can avoid any late slip-ups and will be able to hold their nerve for longer than Celtic. If they can, it will be there’s and Clement’s name on the trophy come the end of the season.
