Rangers news: Robby McCrorie could exit Ibrox in summer transfer window

Robby McCrorie might look to make a summer exit from Rangers because he’s at an age now where he needs to be playing regularly, Derek Ferguson has said.

The 25-year-old might have fancied his chances of becoming number one at Ibrox when Allan McGregor announced his retirement at the end of last season.

But Jack Butland arrived as part of a recruitment drive by former boss Michael Beale and the England international has been a huge hit with supporters, putting in a string of fine performances.

There appears little chance of McCrorie dislodging Butland, 30, any time soon especially given the rapport he has built with the Gers’ passionate fanbase.

Philippe Clement explained why he did not allow him to depart the club on loan during the January transfer window but Ferguson thinks there might be a decision for all parties to make on him at the end of the season.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “I think at the moment, it’s not a criticism of McCrorie because he is a good goalkeeper, a top goalkeeper, but we need to see that with McCrorie over the course of a season.

“He’s been out on loan a few times, but he’s at Rangers and he’s in the Scotland squad for a reason because he’s a good goalkeeper but I still think he’s not on the level of Jack Butland.

“He’s a good goalkeeper but what he is at the moment is a good back-up to maybe put a bit of pressure on Butland but you know Butland’s excellent.

“Could McCrorie be a number one? Yeah, he could, he’s getting on a wee bit, he needs to be playing you can’t be playing second fiddle your whole career.

“He’s a good goalkeeper but like anybody you need to see them over the course of a whole season then you can judge them better on that.”

Will Rangers let Robby McCrorie leave?

Goalkeepers are a completely different breed to any other position on the pitch. The situation is so simple between the sticks, only one can play.

And the problem McCrorie has is he is behind an absolutely superb keeper in the Rangers pecking order. Beale got a lot wrong in the summer, but bringing in Butland was one of his better moves.

Jack Butland has been tipped as a future captain for Rangers

The former Manchester United stopper has been hugely important to Rangers’ title charge and been a real leader on the pitch and in the dressing room.

It does sort of point to one outcome for McCrorie and that is the fact a summer exit is likely to be the best decision he can make at this stage of his career.
