Rangers captain James Tavernier shares what he is constantly telling Todd Cantwell to do

James Tavernier says he is always on the case of Rangers team-mate Todd Cantwell to be more strict with his positioning.

Cantwell produced arguably his best performance under Philippe Clement in Tuesday’s (6 February) 2-1 win over Aberdeen.

The 25-year-old was used in his favoured central position for the game at Ibrox, but he can often roam around the frontline.

Speaking after the game, as per Glasgow Times [7 February], Tavernier said: “Todd’s doing really well.

“I always get on his case about being in the No.10 position and staying in the middle of the pitch.

“If he does that, he gets in the right positions for us and he gets the goals. He can be a real impact player for us. He’s been in really good form.”

Todd Cantwell’s best position

Cantwell is really starting to find his feet now after a rather underwhelming time of things in the first three months of the campaign.

The ex-Norwich City ace has scored in five of the Gers’ past seven matches, including in the past week’s wins over Aberdeen and Livingston.

It was a while ago now, but Cantwell has previously been hauled off during a match as a result of his positioning.

That was at a time when Philippe Clement was still trying to work out where best to utilise the attacker – out wide or through the middle.

Rangers
Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers could well be up this summer.

The good news is that Cantwell has nailed down the number 10 position, playing off either Fabio Silva or Cyriel Dessers.

As captain of the side, it is on Tavernier to give on-field instructions via the manager, so it is good to see he is constantly in Cantwell’s ear.

Now back to the form he showed upon arriving at Ibrox, Rangers have a massive talent on their hands in Cantwell.

In other Rangers news, Roy Keane was quick to shut down Gary Neville’s “staggering” Ibrox claim.
