Rangers: Gary Neville makes ‘Staggering’ Ibrox claim as Roy Keane delivers Celtic dig

Gary Neville has claimed that his trip to Ibrox to face off with Rangers was the best atmosphere he’s ever been a part of, but Roy Keane couldn’t help but make a Celtic dig.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast (7 February), the panel discussed their best and worst moments in Europe when the question about atmospheres came up.

And Manchester United legend Neville was reminiscing about the time his side went to Ibrox for a game and he claimed the noise was better than anything he’d ever experienced before.

“The best atmosphere I’ve ever seen in my life was Ibrox as the game was about to start,” he said. “I thought, what the hell is this?

“Celtic was loud, Galatasaray was loud but honestly for the first couple of minutes and before the game started I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. Noise. Honestly it was unbelievable. Staggering.”

Keane then jumped in with a dig though saying, “Celtic Park is a better atmosphere though.”

Neville then elaborated on his love for Ibrox.

“I think Galatasaray was something special but Ibrox for noise, was the best. Galatasaray stadium was a bowl, it was open. It didn’t have the roof whereas Ibrox has the roof around it.”

Roy Keane is wrong, Rangers are better than Celtic

Obviously Keane has got an affiliation with Celtic and wouldn’t be caught dead saying Rangers are better than them at anything – but he’s wrong.

Ibrox is constantly name-checked as the loudest stadium or the best atmosphere that former players have played in and if Neville felt it playing for Manchester United then there is no doubt Keane did too.

It’s a legendary stadium in Britain and the fans are passionate and loud, always singing for their team and trying to make a difference on the pitch by intimidating the opposition and supporting their players.

There’s something special about the stadium on a European night too which is only matched or bettered when it’s an Old Firm derby. Just ask clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga, RB Leipzig and PSV Eindhoven.

Neville played in and has been to a lot of stadiums around the world so the fact Ibrox left such a lasting feeling on him says plenty. Ibrox is the best and Rangers have the best fans. Confirmed.
