Rangers now set for fast track tribunal over Dujon Sterling incident in 2-1 win vs Aberdeen

Rangers have appealed against the red card shown to Dujon Sterling by Don Robertson in the 2-1 win over Aberdeen, Andy Newport reports.

The Daily Record journalist shared via Twitter on 7 February that the Gers midfielder’s late sending off at Ibrox the night before was now set to be subject of a “fast track” tribunal on Thursday (8 February).

Robertson showed the 24-year-old a straight red for a foul on Jack MacKenzie and opted not to change his decision when sent to the pitch-side monitor for a second viewing by the VAR.

Newport wrote: “Rangers have appealed Dujon Sterling’s red card against Aberdeen. Fast track tribunal set for tomorrow.”

Imminent Sterling decision due after Rangers win at Ibrox

The sending off looked slightly harsh given the contact on the top of MacKenzie’s foot didn’t appear to be huge, but Sterling did careen into him at pace.

The Light Blues man wasn’t helped by apparently slipping as he made contact, which while not his fault may have contributed to a verdict that he was out of control.

It isn’t often that a referee doesn’t change their decision when the VAR indicates they may have got the original decision wrong, but Robertson produced a rare example.

In the end it didn’t derail a hugely important result for Philippe Clement as he handed Neil Warnock a loss in his first game in the SPFL and took Rangers level on points with Celtic ahead of their visit to East Road to face Hibs.

Similar to the Jose Cifuentes red against Dundee prior to the Viaplay Cup final it arguably was one where a yellow would suffice but it would probably be a surprise if the decision was reversed at the tribunal, just as the now Cruzeiro midfielder‘s appeal didn’t have the desired result.

In other Rangers news, a pundit believes one player at Ibrox proved they were “too good for Scottish football” and will be leaving for the Premier League in the summer.
