Rangers must lay foundations now for Tommy Conway signing as Bristol City contract news emerges
Nils Koppen must lay the foundations now for Rangers to sign Bristol City forward Tommy Conway in the summer transfer window after contract news has emerged.
BristolLive reported on its website on Tuesday (6 February) that there have been “speculative links” to the Gers and Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scotland U-21 international, while Premier League clubs have also been “monitoring” the forward’s progress.
Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol on 2 February, the Robins’ technical director Brian Tinnion revealed that the club are doing all they can to get the 21-year-old to commit his future at Ashton Gate beyond 2025.
“Tommy Conway has a year in the summer and we need to try and get him tied down, and we’ll work really hard on that,” said Tinnion. “But apart from Tommy and the three lads, we have everyone contracted in a really stable squad.
“We’ve had the conversations with the agent and (we want) to have those conversations, and with Tommy, again. We want Tommy Conway contracted to the football club.
“He’s a fantastic person, he’s a fantastic player, he’s a goalscorer and he’s really important to us, so we’ll be working really hard from now to get Tommy contracted to the football club.”
The Bristol City academy product nailed down a first-team place last season, having scored 12 goals and laid four assists in 38 appearances across the campaign.
He hit the headlines recently when he scored in the Robins’ 1-1 draw in the FA Cup against West Ham before notching the winning goal in the replay against the Premier League side.
It’s those performances that likely caught the eye of any potential suitors, with the Gers keen to add a younger forward to their ranks.
It’s unclear whether or not the Light Blues made an enquiry about Conway’s availability in the January transfer window, but he could be one they are keeping an eye on ahead of the summer.
He’s registered eight goals in 26 appearances for Bristol City this season as he looks to help his side challenge for a place in the English Championship playoffs.

After Rangers failed to bring a new striker through the door on a permanent basis in January, Koppen will now be scouring the market to find a potential bargain.
The new technical director of recruitment is looking to identify younger talents that the Gers could potentially make a profit on in the future and Conway could fit the bill.
But any interested clubs could have to start making their move soon as a cut-price deal may be on the cards if he doesn’t commit his long-term future to the Robins by time the the summer comes around.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the forward over the next few months as the interest could continue to grow in him if he puts in more eye-catching performances across the rest of the season.
