Rangers controversy v Aberdeen leads to Sky Sports argument at Ibrox

Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton got into a heated argument live on Sky Sports after footage emerged of Conor Goldson’s potential handball as Rangers defeated Aberdeen 2-1 on Tuesday (6 February).

Rangers moved level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership after a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Dons after goals from Rabbi Matondo and Todd Cantwell.

The game was marred by controversy after Dujon Sterling’s sending-off for with Don Robertson sticking to his onfield decision after a VAR review.

Aberdeen will have thought they had a penalty in the second half when the ball struck Goldson’s arm under pressure from an opponent before he seemed to fall on the ball which wasn’t checked by VAR, sparking debate in the Sky Sports Studio (6 February).

Sutton said: “You’ve got the first one here that lands on Goldson’s arm, which is out. But this one I think that is going in. He is falling in front of the ball and making himself bigger. Does that hit him below the shirtline? Let’s have a look here…I think it does.”

Boyd responded: “It is the supporting arm, back to goal. And I think if we rewind a few weeks ago to Celtic at Rugby Park. You weren’t saying that there.”

“That possibly there. If it had been at the other end I am sure they would have checked it. I think it hits him a lot lower than the one at Rugby Park,” Sutton hit back.

“They are fortunate Rangers not to have that awarded against them.” Boyd finished it off with: “Talk about clutching at straws. Let’s move on.”

Aberdeen will feel hard done by at Ibrox

Whether Goldson’s handball was a penalty or not, Aberdeen will certainly be miffed as to how the Goldson incidents weren’t checked by VAR.

The first one, fans will argue those will have been given in other matches elsewhere and there’s a case to argue that Goldson’s arm was in an unnatural position.

The second incident soon afterwards is a bit cut and dry as Goldson could do nothing about the ball under his arm when he was on the floor.

Regardless of what side you’re on, that is the kind of fortune and luck you need on your side when you’re fighting for the Scottish Premiership title and that’s exactly what Philippe Clement and his men experienced with glee on Tuesday night.

The Gers weren’t at their best that’s for certain but when you’re in the midst of a gruelling title challenge, performances are a bonus, wins no matter the performance are an absolute must.

Rangers

Credit to Clement’s side for ensuring they kept the pressure on their Old Firm rivals.

In other Rangers news, one player is due to jet out of Glasgow on Friday as another Ibrox exit is on the cards.
