Neil Warnock reacts instantly to Rangers controversy v Aberdeen, ‘we don’t get that in England’

Neil Warnock has reacted instantly to the referee’s decision to stick with the red card handed to Dujon Sterling in the match between Rangers and Aberdeen.

The midfielder was shown a straight red card late on in the Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox on Tuesday (6 February), which the hosts won 2-1.

VAR advised the referee to review the decision, but after taking a moment to view the replays of the tackle on Jack McKenzie, the official stuck with the red card.

“It makes a change doesn’t it for a referee to be brave and stick with his decision, we don’t get that in England,” Warnock said on Sky Sports Football (5 February, 10.35pm).

Sterling unlucky for Rangers?

Warnock was handed the most difficult of matches on his Aberdeen debut, with Rangers undoubtedly the in-form team in Scottish football right now.

The manager has been there and done it all before in his superb career in the dugout, but even this trip to Ibrox would have been daunting.

The Glasgow stadium was in full voice from the very first whistle, with the home supporters fully aware of what was at stake. A win by a three-goal margin would have seen Philippe Clement’s side overtake fierce rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

That didn’t exactly happen, but the Gers are now level on points with the Bhoys, with the latter ahead only on goal difference.

Things started very well for the hosts thanks to Rabbi Matondo’s opener, but Bojan Miovski’s goal levelled the tie heading into half-time. Todd Cantwell then fired home a winner for the Ibrox club, but the final few minutes were nervy for the home side after Sterling’s dismissal.

The midfielder might argue that he slipped while making the tackle, but it was a rash decision to fly in nonetheless, having only just come on as a substitute.
