Ally McCoist makes ‘bang average’ Rangers and Celtic claim live on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist has claimed both Rangers and Celtic are “bang average” as things stand, so it would take them a few years to become competitive in the Premier League, with the ongoing debate emerging again.

Every so often the question is asked whether the Old Firm clubs would be able to compete in England, but the Rangers legend claimed they’d have no chance as it stands.

However, he went on to insist that with the money on offer in England, and the global support and revenue both Glasgow teams generate, they could eventually compete – although he doesn’t see it happening.

Speaking to talkSPORT [via the Daily Record, 5 February], McCoist shared: “How they would get on is interesting as well. It would take them three or four years because I am going to be brutally honest, Jeff, they are two bang-average Rangers and Celtic teams, at this moment in time.

“It’s due to finance, finance is 99 per cent of it here, that’s a million miles away. If they did get in the leagues it would take them a while.

“But with the support they’ve got, if they could survive and take their time getting up there, they would be fine. But I don’t see it happening because there are too many obstacles.”

The Premier League is a level above

As things stand, the Premier League is a level above the SPFL. The reasons behind that are there to be debated, and Rangers and Celtic’s position in terms of the size of the clubs is often a hot talking point, but there is no disputing the difference in quality.

McCoist was very critical of the current Old Firm sides, but it was fair criticism given the standards on display at the top of the Premier League and the Gers team he played in, although he has previously dished out high praise.

Finance expert Kieran Maguire recently weighed in on the debate as he looked into the financial aspect of it, claiming the Glasgow clubs compete with the Premier League’s top six in terms of matchday revenue, with the TV money the big difference.

He, much like McCoist, shared his view that a move would be impossible given the impact on the game in Scotland and with English clubs not willing to add two new competitors into the mix.
