Rangers: John Bennett and James Bisgrove slammed after what journalist hears from Ibrox

Gary Keown has slammed John Bennett and James Bisgrove for their role in the previous recruitment model at Rangers.

Writing on page 93 of the Scottish Mail on Sunday (4 February), the journalist said it puts a lot of what went on during a number of “ridiculously wasteful years” into perspective after Gers director Alastair Johnston admitted the club didn’t previously have the recruitment “expertise internally” before Nils Koppen arrived at Ibrox.

Johnston said the previous sporting director Ross Wilson was “fairly individual”, with Keown questioning how the board could allow him to continue to “blunder along” in the position for four years before getting him out of the club.

Brighter days at Rangers under Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen

It’s completely bizarre that Rangers didn’t have a proper plan in place in terms of recruitment before last year as Wilson was allowed to make most of the decisions on his own.

A club that is looking to achieve things on the pitch and build for the future simply can’t be run in such a cavalier way, which is why there has been nowhere near enough success at Ibrox in recent years.

Following the appointments of Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen, the Gers finally appear to be putting the right pieces in place to create long-lasting success.

In this day and age, every transfer and decision of significance needs to be taken seriously and there needs to be a sensible discussion about the right approach.

It’s clear that those things weren’t happening before and the Light Blues suffered because of that, but there is reason for optimism now as the club is in a position to start moving forward again.
