Rangers have next striker signing lined up already – and it’s not Lawrence Shankland

Kenny Miller believes Nils Koppen may already have a new striker lined up to join Rangers despite failing to land a centre forward in the January transfer window.

Writing on the Daily Record website on Sunday (4 February), the BBC pundit said there is more planning that goes into the Gers’ recruitment now after Colombian winger Oscar Cortes had been on the club’s radar for a “long time” before making the switch to Ibrox from French side Lens on loan.

He added that he never believed the Light Blues would bring in Lawrence Shankland because of the money Hearts were demanding after there has been a shift in transfer policy under new director of football recruitment Koppen and manager Philippe Clement.

Rangers looking to use money wisely

There is no doubt that Rangers needed a change in approach to their recruitment following last summer’s overhaul of the squad by Michael Beale at Ibrox.

The former Gers boss was pretty much given free rein to bring in who he wanted without much thought going into how they could benefit the club in the short and long-term.

The strategy now appears to be on bringing in younger players who can do a job in the first team at the moment and will get better in the years to come, potentially leading to the club receiving high transfer fees for them.

While Shankland would’ve certainly improved the attacking options currently, the 28-year-old perhaps doesn’t fit into this new way of thinking.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Light Blues do already have their eyes on a forward target for the summer when more cash will be readily available for Clement to bring someone in.
