Chris Sutton shares ‘wide open’ Rangers title admission in Celtic transfer verdict

Chris Sutton has shared his verdict on the Scottish Premiership title race, admitting that a lacklustre window from Celtic has given Rangers hope of winning the league.

Philippe Clement’s Light Blues currently sit five points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side with a game in hand, but their poor defeat in December’s Old Firm derby saw them widely criticised by pundits and written off as title contenders by some.

Sutton in particular was quick to slam Todd Cantwell’s performance at Celtic Park, but the former Hoops’ striker thinks that Rodgers’ poor transfer window may have left the door “wide open” for Rangers to steal the title from under their nose.

Writing for the Daily Record (2 February) he said: “I just can’t fathom how they have got to this point. Make no mistake, they are gambling with the title here, regardless of how you look at the business Rangers have done.

“In the summer they failed to prepare properly for the Champions League and paid the price. Now they are risking even getting to the Champions League as they have left the door wide open for their rivals.”

Rangers have hope in Celtic chase

Most Rangers supporters have ultimately been left underwhelmed by their side’s transfer business this month, with a majority of fans pining for a new number nine to bolster Clement’s current forward options at Ibrox for the remainder of the season.

However, supporters on the blue half of Glasgow only have to look to their city neighbours to recognise just how positive a transfer window they have had, as Celtic and their fans are in complete meltdown over their business this last month.

The Hoops may still be the marginal favourites for the title, but the confidence that was evident around Celtic Park in December has noticeably faded and the threat of the Gers closing the gap only appears to be growing week in and week out.

Hopefully, Rangers will make use of that positive transfer window and begin to close the gap to Rodgers’ side at the top of the table. If they want to lift this title, they’re going to have to improve their record in the remaining Old Firm clashes.
