Revealed: What South American sources say about Rangers clause to sign Oscar Cortes in Ibrox deal on deadline day

Oscar Cortes will need to make a much bigger impact at Rangers than he has in France if he wishes to make his loan stay a permanent one, according to the Daily Record.

The Colombia Under-23 international has arrived in Glasgow to complete his six-month loan switch from Ligue 1 outfit Lens, with a bumper deal running until 2028 on the table.

As reported in the print edition of the news outlet (Page 44, 1 February), sources in South America have confirmed that the Gers have negotiated a clause with Lens which will see them sign Cortes permanently in the summer should his loan stay be a success.

Cortes has made just four first-team appearances in France, although Rangers are confident he will be better suited to life in Scotland.

Smart

This is a clever move from Rangers which is low-risk high-reward.

By bringing the 20-year-old in on loan with an option to make the deal permanent in the summer, the ball is firmly in Philippe Clement’s court.

Should Cortes perform, then the club can add an exciting young talent to their ranks permanently in the summer and will have some increased firepower for the rest of the season.

On the other hand, if Cortes struggles just as he has done in France thus far, then the Gers can forget they ever made the move with nothing but a few months of wage fees wasted.

In addition, offering the player a lucrative deal should he perform will provide the Colombian with some much-needed motivation.

Rangers

Cortes has shown that he can perform, with his seven goals in 29 appearances for boyhood side Millonarios seeing him earn a switch to Europe in the first place.

In other Rangers news, a Euro club could still launch a last-minute bid to sign one player at Ibrox.
