Revealed: What Rangers chiefs privately say about Jack Butland after last-gasp transfer approach at Ibrox

Rangers chiefs are privately hoping that the club’s chase for silverware will convince Jack Butland to stay at the club and pursue his England goals at Ibrox.

That is according to the Daily Record, with the newspaper reporting on its website on Thursday (1 February) that Butland has ambitions of returning to the Three Lions squad.

The Gers turned down a January transfer approach for the goalkeeper from Nottingham Forest, issuing a hands-off warning [STV News, 31 January].

“Privately, Rangers chiefs are hoping the huge platform they can offer Butland as they chase Premiership gold and Europa League glory this season will convince him to stay put in Scotland and chase his international ambitions here,” according to the Daily Record.

Staying put?

It certainly looks like Butland is staying put at Ibrox, particularly given how the winter transfer window is rapidly coming to a close.

And that will be a huge relief to Gers supporters more than anything else, with fans certain to have gone into panic mode had Butland left the club at this stage of the season.

The Glasgow outfit will, of course, be desperate to keep hold of their number one for quite some time, with the goalkeeper having shone brightly at Ibrox since his summer switch.

He has certainly been one of the better signings from former manager Michael Beale, with current manager Philippe Clement set to do all he can to ensure Butland does not leave the club.

Rangers

But given the reported interest from the Premier League, both from a club and player perspective, that may be difficult.

A big payday could go the way of Rangers if they sell Butland, while the goalkeeper could have a better chance of making the England squad once more if he is playing in the English top flight.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have looked at a striker, with the player currently on trial at Premier League giants Manchester United.
