Rangers transfer news as Derek Clark shares Borna Barisic Ibrox exit update

Derek Clark has admitted that he would be “surprised” to see Borna Barisic extend his contract at Rangers beyond the end of the season.

Philippe Clement isn’t spoiled with options at left-back at the moment at Ibrox, but the Light Blues have managed to keep Ridvan Yilmaz throughout the January transfer window despite plenty of interest in the Turkish international [Sky Sports, 1 February].

But one defender now appears likely to leave Glasgow at the end of the campaign, with Rangers Review journalist Clark suggesting that Barisic is unlikely to be awarded a new deal and will be one of many to depart Ibrox at the end of the campaign.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel (1 February, 21:15) he said: “I think Borna has been a great servant to the club, but I would be surprised if he was offered a new deal that’s for sure.

“I think he will be one of a number of players that depart in the summer, but I am quite content with the left-back situation.”

Makes sense

Barisic has been an excellent servant to Rangers throughout his career in Scotland, but there comes a time when it makes sense for all parties for players to leave a football club and that seems to be the case for the Croatian international.

Yilmaz has quite quickly become the Gers first-choice left-back and when the Turkish defender is fit, Clement will more than likely name him in the starting line-up week in and week out.

Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz

Rangers couldn’t afford to let the 32-year-old leave this month, purely because of the lack of alternative options at Ibrox and the constant speculation surrounding Yilmaz’s long-term future.

But now that the 22-year-old’s future has been resolved and the Gers are set to have more money to spend during the summer window, the Light Blues have little insensitive in extending Barisic’s stay beyond this term.
