Oscar Cortes checks in for Ibrox medical as 2028 contract details emerge for deadline day signing

RC Lens forward Oscar Cortes has arrived at Rangers to undergo medical tests ahead of his deadline-day move to Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish news outlet reported (31 January) that the 20-year-old has been given plenty of incentive to earn a longer stay after Gers chiefs dangled a bumper deal running to the summer of 2028 in front of him.

It is believed that the Light Blues have negotiated a clause that will see them sign Cortes permanently in the summer if he performs well for Philippe Clement’s side.

Cortes has only made just four appearances in France but the Gers are confident he has all the tools to settle and make an impact at Ibrox given his uneventful season so far.

Risk

Rangers have really stepped up their recruitment in the final days of the January transfer window and the Gers appear to be building Clement a squad which should be more than capable of lifting the Scottish Premiership side this season.

The Gers may still trail Celtic at the moment, but with the right additions this month, they should be more than capable of closing that gap before the end of the campaign and the signing of Cortes could prove a huge step.

There is no doubt the Colombian winger is a talented product, otherwise Rangers and Clement wouldn’t be moving to sign him but the uphill task is getting him to speed in time to make the instant impact he needs to seal a permanent move.

Just four games played all season means Cortes could find it hard to settle and acclimatise himself but the Gers are confident he can which makes this deal something of a risk.

However, it is clear Clement needs attacking reinforcements before the window shuts and Cortes given his talent and potential is a risk worth taking indeed, as if every other transfer at Ibrox.

Rangers

Clement likes to play with wingers in his side and at the moment, the Belgian isn’t particularly spoilt for choice in those areas, particularly now that Abdallah Sima is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines having picked up an injury at the African Cup of Nations.

Hopefully, Cortes can slip into the starting XI and compete with the likes of Rabbi Matondo and Scott Wright for a place out wide in the Gers’ team week in and week out.

That bumper four-year contract is lying in wait for him. There may not be a better incentive.
