Hellas Verona stance emerges on last-minute Cyriel Dessers transfer in Rangers Deadline Day twist

Cyriel Dessers is set to remain at Ibrox beyond the January transfer window, with potential suitors moving on from the Rangers forward, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported on its website (1 February, 15:13) that the Gers striker is set to remain at Ibrox beyond Thursday (1 February) night’s deadline, with Torino pulling out of the race for the 29-year-old’s signature.

Hellas Verona had also been credited with an interest in Dessers this month, however, the Italian side have turned their attention elsewhere in their search for a new forward in the final hours of the January window.

Excellent news

Few Rangers supporters would have said this only a month ago but it is excellent news for Philippe Clement and his side that Dessers doesn’t appear to be going anywhere in the final hours of the January transfer window.

The Nigerian forward is far from perfect and does miss big chances on quite a regular basis but, at the moment, he is all that the Light Blues have at the top end of the pitch given the current injury crisis at Ibrox.

Danilo’s season is all but over, Kemar Roofe cannot stay fit and it remains to be seen whether Abdallah Sima will ever feature in a Gers’ shirt again. That leaves Dessers as the only natural centre-forward in the side and had Clement lost him as well, it would have ended Rangers’ title hopes.

However, it seems that such a crisis has been avoided and the 29-year-old will remain in Glasgow until the end of the campaign at least. Maybe then, Rangers can consider selling Dessers and recruiting a new number nine, but such a deal cannot be completed so close to the deadline.
