Scott McKenna exit talks underway at Nottingham Forest as Rangers linked with late January transfer – Sky Sports

FC Copenhagen have opened talks with Nottingham Forest to sign Rangers target Scott McKenna before the transfer deadline, according to Sky Sports.

Writing in their live transfer blog (30 January, 12:10), the news outlet report that the central defender wants to leave for more regular football ahead of Euro 2024 this summer.

Rangers and Celtic were linked with a move for the former Aberdeen defender earlier in the transfer window, but he now looks set for a move to Champions League competitors Copenhagen before his contract expires in the summer.

“FC Copenhagen have entered negotiations with Forest over a deal that would take Scottish international Scott McKenna to Denmark,” they wrote.

“McKenna is thought to be keen on the move in order to get more regular game time in the run up to Scotland’s involvement in the Euros this summer.

“McKenna – who has also been linked with Rangers – has not played for Forest in the Premier League since September.

“McKenna’s Forest contract expires in June, and so any agreement with Copenhagen is expected to mark an end to his time at the City Ground.”

Makes sense

Rangers were linked with a move for McKenna because the talk was that Philippe Clement wanted a new central defender this month, but it seems like that information may have been incorrect.

As the month has gone on we’ve seen less links to centre-backs and that means a move for McKenna never really looked likely, but the fact he is Scottish and looking for more regular game time meant a link to Glasgow’s biggest club made logical sense and were easy to do.

Rangers

Ultimately though with Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar, Leon Balogun and even Leon King all available to play in that position it wasn’t a priority for this transfer window.

Copenhagen are able to offer him regular football and a shot to play in the Champions League, which makes them an attractive option.

It’s a deal that makes sense for everyone, including Rangers, with other deals needing to be completed before Thursday’s deadline as a priority.
