Rangers told to get rid of Kieran Dowell, he’s not earning his money at Ibrox
We’re delighted to welcome former Ibrox star Derek Ferguson as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points in Govan…
Rangers should try to move Kieran Dowell on in the summer because he is not doing enough to earn his money at Ibrox, Derek Ferguson has said.
The playmaker was signed on a free transfer from Norwich City last summer as part of a much-derided recruitment drive under former boss Michael Beale.
Dowell, 26, has made just seven Scottish Premiership appearances, though, and was injured during the recent trip to La Manga on Rangers’ midseason camp.
He had just started to get a little run in the team under Philippe Clement prior to the setback but Ferguson thinks it is in the best interests of all parties to cut ties at the end of the season.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s a chance Rangers took because Dowell’s been injury prone, so they took a chance and it’s not worked out, simple as that.
“Again for the boy, you’ve got to at times feel for them but he gets himself back, you can see there’s a player in there, can see there’s talent there.
“But you need more than talent, you need a body that can handle the rigours of full-time football. You go over to La Manga and a lot is made of the surface that it wasn’t the greatest, I mean there was a few wee divots here and there but come on.
“But no it’s just been the story of his time at Rangers, it’s injury after injury. He’s another one, I know he’s in contract but they should be looking to do a deal because it’s not working out for the boy and to be fair I think it’s a two-way thing because he’s been put on a good contract, good money.

“But if you’re not playing, not producing it out there on the pitch, I think you’ve got to look at yourself, that’s just my own feelings.
“Should you be sitting there and taking the money? No, I think you’ve got to earn your money, maybe that’s an old-fashioned view but he’s another one who’s probably leaving Rangers in the summer.”
