Barry Ferguson shares ‘desperate’ John Lundstram admission as new Rangers January ‘priority’ emerges

Barry Ferguson has suggested that Philippe Clement will be “desperate” to secure John Lundstram’s future at Ibrox, suggesting it will now be the Rangers manager’s “number one priority”.

The English midfielder’s current deal in Glasgow expires at the end of the season and so far there has been little suggestion that he will definitely extend his stay, with his long-term future at Rangers remaining undecided.

While Clement’s focus will likely be on the final days of the transfer window, Ferguson believes that the Belgian will be doing all that he can to give Lundstram a new deal, with clubs in England likely circling for the 29-year-old.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (29 January, 19:00) he said: “Lundstram has got be your number one priority. I’m sure the manager will be desperate to get that over the line, there’s no doubt.

“Since the new manager has come in, I think John Lundstram has been outstanding. Outstanding, so I’m sure there are a few clubs down south who would take him in a heartbeat so I think that’s one that Rangers need to get over the line and done quickly.”

Get it done

As Ferguson suggested, since Clement arrived at Ibrox, Lundstram has been one of the Gers standout stars, impressing week in and week out at the heart of the Belgian’s midfield.

While the likes of Nicolas Raskin, Jose Cifuentes, Dujon Sterling and Ryan Jack have all been in and out of the side through poor form or injury, the 29-year-old has remained in the starting XI week in and week out and seems to be consistently getting better.

It would be disastrous if the Gers were to lose the Englishman’s services for nothing come the end of the season, especially when they have an easy chance to get this deal over the line now.

Rangers

Hopefully, Lundstram’s future will be tied up sooner rather than later. Clement will likely turn his attention to the players already within his playing squad once the madness of the January transfer window calms down in the coming weeks.
