Rangers transfer news: Lens gem Oscar Cortes leaves Colombia camp as Ibrox rumours gather pace

Oscar Cortes has been given the blessing of Colombia Under-21 to return to Europe and finalise his club future amid links with Rangers.

Futbol Red reporter Julian Capera reported on Sunday (28 January) that an agreement is in place between Lens and Rangers for Cortes.

The 20-year-old must still finalise personal terms, and he now appears to have been given permission to do so.

A statement released by the Colombian Football Federation read: “The Sports Department of the Colombian Football Federation and the Technical Body of the Colombia Under 23 National Team report that the player Oscar Cortes is being called out of the national team concentration to travel to France and comply with the request of his club, RC Lens. Ligue 1 commitments.

“Coach Hector Cardenas, his coaching staff and the group of players wish Oscar Cortes success in this new season, hoping that in the next opportunity he can be part of the Colombia U23 National Team again.”

A tweet posted by ESPN Colombia soon after read: “Oscar Cortes was dismissed from the Tricolor as reported by the Colombian Football Federation in a statement. The Colombian travels to France, but everything indicates that his new club will be Rangers.”

Nicely done

The January transfer window has been a complete contrast to the summer with regards to how Rangers are getting their business done.

Players – many of whom very few fans would have heard of, let’s face it – are being targeted and signed with fairly minimal fuss.

Fabio Silva was signed out of the blue, as was Mohammed Diomande, while Brazilian full-back Jefte also appears to be close to signing.

There is now a new name for Gers fans to frantically Google as a deal to sign Cortes appears to be moving quickly.

Having been given permission by his country to return to Europe, it is now over to Rangers to complete the formalities.

With the transfer window closing in a few days’ time, many fans will be hoping that there is still room for one more incoming arrival.
