Rangers: Gary Keown stunned by Alfredo Morelos transfer view at Ibrox – ‘greatest of mysteries’

Gary Keown believes that it is the “greatest of mysteries” that Rangers fans want Alfredo Morelos back at Ibrox after hearing tales of his attitude.

The Colombian striker was a force of nature on his day, scoring 124 goals in 269 appearances at Rangers. However, the goals dried up and his flareups continued on the pitch, which was not enough to keep him at the club.

Having heard stories about Morelos in Rangers training before his eventual free transfer to Santos, Keown is dumbfounded by Gers fans who still want him to return amidst a striker search at the club.

“Too often, allowed to live by his own rules. And too often, allowed to mooch about in any mood or any shape he liked. Until it all went too far and the matchday performances dried up,” Keown wrote for Scottish Mail on Sunday (28 January, page 97).

“This is why Rangers needed a guy like Philippe Clement to come in and set different standards. And it’s why it remains the greatest of mysteries that some Ibrox fans appear to think it still might be worthwhile bringing Morelos back.”

Move on

Morelos will have definitely left Ibrox with a lot of good memories, especially with his number of goals in a Rangers shirt. However, all good things come to an end, and the relationship with the striker surely has.

He was one of the most feared strikers in the Scottish Premiership, having scored 20-plus goals in four separate league campaigns. It is clear from his recent move to Brazil, though, that Morelos is now past his best-by date.

The forward joined Santos on a free transfer in September, made three appearances and scored zero goals, before leaving again in December. He exercised his release clause after the club were relegated to Serie B, as per Football London.

With Clement now able to choose from Kemar Roofe, Cyriel Dessers, Abdallah Sima, Fabio Silva and Danilo, when all fit, there is little room for Morelos at Rangers anymore. A return could ruin his Ibrox legacy, especially if he is to play under the no-nonsense Clement.

It is understandable that some fans miss the crazy, energetic, free-scoring Morelos who graced Ibrox for several years but that striker is gone now.
