BBC Sport pundit suggests Rangers must learn from Celtic after Cameron Carter-Vickers transfer news
Kenny Miller has told Rangers to learn from the example set by Celtic when it comes to tying players down to new contracts.
Celtic announced on Friday (26 January) that centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers has signed a new deal with the club.
Players’ contracts have been in the spotlight at Ibrox of late as John Lundstram and Borna Barisic are both due to become free agents in June.
Alfredo Morelos departed on a free at the end of last season, meanwhile, and it is something Miller feels the Gers need to be on top of.
Speaking on Clyde1 Superscoreboard [26 January], as shared on Twitter, the BBC Sport pundit said: “It’s a wonderful ‘signing’ from Celtic.
“They’re taking care of the business, whereas the other side of the city it’s not been as good.
“There was Morelos leaving for nothing, Lundstram and Barisic are in the final months of their contracts and teams will be looking to nick them.”
Lessons learned
There can be no excuses for Rangers failing to agree new deals with players before their contracts enter the final year – or indeed final 18 months.
However, what can be said is that the club are now in far better hands since Philippe Clement came on board, as can be seen with the incoming transfer business.
Should Barisic and Lundstram move on in the summer for nothing, that is multiple-millions the club have effectively missed out on.
Looking further ahead, Tom Lawrence, Scott Wright and Robby McCrorie are among those out of contract at Ibrox in the summer of 2025 [Transfermarkt].
The aim is to negotiate fresh terms with each of those to determine whether the club intend to keep them on, or if not they should consider selling this coming summer. With a new regime at the helm, let’s hope a corner has been turned.
In other Rangers news, a transfer decision regarding Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland is now surely set in stone.
