Kris Boyd hits out at ‘myth’ surrounding Rangers and Celtic rivalry

Kris Boyd insists it is a “myth” that Celtic have been the dominant team in Scotland as Old Firm rivals Rangers remain the most successful club in the country.

The former Rangers player was responding in his column for The Scottish Sun [26 January] after Neil Lennon suggested Rangers do not have the right mentality to catch Celtic this season.

Rangers trail Celtic by five points with a game in hand, while the sides next meet again at Ibrox in April.

Boyd said: “Another thing that riles me is this idea Celtic have been the dominant team in Scottish football for as long as anyone can remember.

“It’s a myth. Before Rangers found themselves playing lower league football they were the No 1 team in Scotland.

“And by my calculations, they are still the most successful team in Scottish football.

“The narrative that’s been built up is that Celtic are the team that’s been dominant is only true since 2012.

“It’s like Celtic fans forget football existed before then. Unless it’s 1967. But they seem to forget whatever they like when it suits them.”

Well said

Boyd is just echoing the thoughts of every Rangers supporter: Celtic fans clearly have short memories.

As of December, when Rangers beat Aberdeen in the Viaplay Cup final at Hampden, the Light Blues have 118 trophies to their name.

That consists of 55 league titles, 34 Scottish Cups, 28 League Cups and one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

Celtic, by comparison, have won 116 trophies – 53 of those being Scottish Premiership titles.

In terms of pure history, there can be no complaints: Rangers have been the most successful club across both sides’ entire existence.

Rangers

Granted, in more recent times they have won more league titles, but they still have a couple more to win before they draw level overall.

And it was not so long ago that they thought this year’s title was already in the bag, only for Rangers to close the gap significantly.

Should the Gers overtake Celtic before the end of the season, it will give them even less of a foot to stand on in this debate.
