Done Deal: Winner named in Rangers and Celtic race to sign Leicester defender Luke Thomas
Middlesbrough have been named as the winner in the Rangers and Celtic race to sign Leicester City defender Luke Thomas.
That is according to Football Scotland journalist Mark Hendry, who confirmed the signature on X on Friday (26 January).
The 22-year-old left-back spent the first half of the season on loan from the Foxes at Premier League club Sheffield United.
“Luke Thomas, linked with both Celtic and Rangers this window, joins Boro,” Hendry wrote on X, with Boro confirming the signature on their official website (26 January).
Top talent
Thomas really is a top player, but his career has stuttered somewhat after he initially burst onto the scene at Leicester.
The left-back was a Premier League standout for the Foxes before their relegation to the Championship, and was quickly allowed to return to the top-flight through his loan switch to the Blades.
But that season-long loan was cut short earlier this month, alerting the likes of Rangers and Celtic, but it is now Middlesbrough who have come out on top in the battle for his signature.
The Leicester City academy graduate will now line out for Michael Carrick’s side for the remainder of the current season.
Rangers won’t be feeling too disappointed, however, with Fabrizio Romano reporting on X on Friday that they have reached an agreement with Fluminense to sign fellow left-back Jefte.
It is now perhaps just Celtic that need to bring in a new player in that position, which will be welcome news for Rangers supporters.
In other Rangers news, a BBC Sport journalist was blown away by a “stunning” moment from the Gers Man of the Match in the recent win against Hibernian.
