Rangers target transfers from Holland, Belgium, Poland, Austria and South America after Mohamed Diomande deal – Chris Jack
Rangers will be targeting signing players from new regions under Nils Koppen after completing a deal for Mohamed Diomande, according to Chris Jack.
Writing on the Rangers Review website (26 January), the reliable journalist reports that the club have had a rethink in how they identify talent since the appointment of the new recruitment chief at Ibrox.
And with the club confirming a deal for Diomande on Friday afternoon, they will now target talent in South America, Holland, Belgium, Poland and Austria going forward.
“The appointment of Koppen coincides with a rethink in terms of how Rangers identify talent,” he wrote.
“Scandinavia has been pinpointed as a market that is potentially ripe and Diomande represents a first forage into that region under this regime.
“The top tiers of Holland and Belgium are natural areas for exploration, while work will also be undertaken in South America and in the likes of Poland and Austria.”
Sensible
Rangers have money but they can’t compete financially with other teams in Europe’s top flights, and that often leaves them at a disadvantage when it comes to transfers.
Often what fans have noticed in recent years is that the club’s signings tend to be players that weren’t particularly wanted at their current club or they were an unknown quantity that Rangers were gambling on.
But Diomande was neither of those two things and represents a fantastic new way of thinking for the club, which could see the club bring players in early before the trend and then either sell them on for a fantastic profit or have them at the club performing very well.

It’s a similar model that clubs like Brighton have taken on in recent years and we’ve seen how it works for them, so this seems like a positive switch.
It will be great to watch how the club progress in the coming years with this plan, and it’s off to a great start with Diomande through the door early.
