Scott Brown shares Rangers verdict after being asked about Ibrox development on BBC Radio Scotland

New Ayr United manager Scott Brown has shared a verdict about Rangers ahead of the clash between the two clubs.

The Scottish Championship outfit, who are currently seventh in the table, will travel to Ibrox next month for a Scottish Cup fifth round encounter.

As per the official Ayr website (23 January), Brown has joined the club as head coach until June 2026, with former Gers man Steven Whittaker his assistant.

When asked about the tie against Rangers on BBC Sportsound (08:48pm, 24 Jan), Brown said: “Yeah we’ll take care of that when that game comes up, but for us it’s important that we just make sure that we focus on Saturday.

“Queen’s Park away is going to be a big game for the lads, we’re going to Hampden, it’s a good stadium for the lads to go and play in, but it’s also a big pitch as well so when we do get the ball back we need to make sure we do control it but are also structurally secure behind the ball, we’re solid throughout the middle of the team and are focused as well, because I’m sure Callum will have them well-drilled, he’s been in the job a little bit longer than I have.

“But at the same time we’re on a good run so we need to make sure the lads stay positive, go there and believe we can win the game.”

Huge tie

It will be a massive tie for several reasons, not least because of Brown’s association with Rangers’ biggest rivals Celtic.

The former Bhoys captain will be going to Ibrox looking to cause a major upset with his new side, but they have plenty of big games before that one.

As the former midfielder alluded to, a trip to Queen’s Park awaits on Saturday (27 January), with manager Callum Davidson looking to clinch a victory for the hosts. Ayr then host Dundee United in league action, with all eyes then turning to the famous Scottish Cup.

Ibrox will certainly be bouncing for the match, with the home supporters certain to give Brown and his players a very cold reception.

The man in the dugout is undoubtedly looking forward to the match, but his comments suggest that he is not going to let the occasion get to him, with his players needing to have the same attitude if they are to pull off a shock.

In other Rangers news, one exit-linked Gers man is surely set for an Ibrox stay after what happened recently with his manager Clement.
