Rangers: Steven Gerrard and Michael Beale react to Steven Davis development at Ibrox today
Steven Davis today announced his retirement from football in an emotional message to his fans, and former Rangers bosses Steven Gerrard and Michael Beale have now responded to the announcement.
There were touching scenes at Ibrox today as Rangers paid tribute to a club legend, including a speech from Philippe Clement before Davis was presented with a signed shirt from all the players.
After 23 years of playing, including 371 appearances across his two spells at Ibrox, Davis decided to call time on his career after conversations with his family and advice from medical staff.
Davis shared a heartwarming statement on Instagram [25 January], in which he detailed the reason for his retirement and thanked everybody who he has worked with during his 23 years in the professional game.
Gerrard responded to the post with two heart emojis, while Beale wrote his own message, sharing: “A wonderful footballer and an even better man. Congratulations Steven Davis on an incredible career.”
A true Rangers legend
While his retirement is likely to feel sad in the immediate aftermath, Davis will be able to look back at his career with plenty of pride after all that he has achieved both at Ibrox and elsewhere.
371 appearances for Rangers, where he won four Scottish League titles, three Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups, as well as 140 caps for Northern Ireland which have made him the most capped British player in history, have cemented his place in football history.
His final appearance for Rangers came with the unfortunate blow of a cruciate ligament injury in December 2022, which ultimately played a part in his retirement after a long rehabilitation process including surgery.

Davis even got a taste of managing Rangers for a European fixture in between Beale and Clement’s tenures – something he shared in his message to the fans would stick with him forever and he would always be grateful for.
The midfielder will always remain a legend at Ibrox, and Ibrox News joins fans in wishing him the best in his retirement.
In other Rangers news, a journalist has shared what he was told about a last-gasp move to sign Lawrence Shankland.
