Dean Jones shares what he has been told about late Rangers January move to sign Lawrence Shankland

Dean Jones has been told not to rule out a late move by Rangers to sign Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, with just days left of the January transfer window.

The former Eurosport journalist reported that, while the move isn’t guaranteed to happen, it’s not dead yet and there is still a chance something materialised before 1 February.

Shankland has been the main talking point of the January transfer window as far as Rangers are concerned, with the clamour for a regular goalscorer at Ibrox driving constant links to Hearts’ main man.

Speaking to Give Me Sport [25 January], Jones reported: “Hearts fans are ticking off the days and growing in optimism that this deal will not happen. I’m told there’s a chance and to not totally rule out a Rangers move for Shankland.

“It won’t definitely happen, but it’s not dead yet. So, if Rangers fans are looking for some optimism that this deal is still alive, it is still alive, but only just.”

Surely Rangers have to push for this one

The links to Shankland simply will not go away at Ibrox, and the rumours make too much sense for the club to ignore. They need a striker, preferably one proven in Scotland, so who better than the Scottish Premiership top scorer?

With 13 goals in 22 league appearances so far this season, and 24 from 27 last season, Shankland is the best option to provide the goalscoring touch at Rangers.

The struggles of Cyriel Dessers and constant injury issues suffered by Danilo, a proper goalscoring forward could be the difference in Rangers’ push for the title this season.

Rangers

Not to mention, Shankland is a boyhood Gers fan, which always adds something extra to both the player and the fans’ appreciation at Ibrox.

Rangers’ interest is longstanding and with a striker still top priority in the transfer window, it’s likely to be a busy week, with plenty of speculation continuing to plague Hearts and Shankland, while those at Ibrox will be rubbing their hands together.
