Chris Jack shares brand new twist in Rangers transfer pursuit of Gijs Smal at Ibrox

Rangers have no interest in signing FC Twente left-back Gijs Smal this month, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist shared on his personal Twitter account (23 January) that the Light Blues are not interested in signing the defender in a late January transfer move.

Dutch outlet Voetbal International reported on Tuesday (23 January) that the Light Blues are interested in signing the 26-year-old left-back whose contract with the Eredivisie club is coming to an end at the end of the season.

However, in a fresh new twist at Ibrox, those rumours have been completely quashed by Jack who swiftly posted: “Rangers have no interest in FC Twente left-back Gijs Smal.”

Snappy

Rangers are already short on options at left-back with only Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz at the Belgian’s disposal currently and it seems as though one, if not both, of the defenders could be nearing the Ibrox exit door.

Given the futures of both players, it’s of no surprise to see the Gers linked with so many names in the role this month and Smal has emerged as yet another name in the frame.

Smal has proven a very capable outlet for FC Twente and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, picking up two goals and ten assists from left back in 44 matches played.

Such form is sure to keep several clubs in Europe on alert including a club desperate for an upgrade and quality at left-back but Jack has quickly destroyed any rumours flying around surrounding the Gers’ apparent interest.

Yilmaz has been linked with a move away this month and there’s no definitive answer as to whether he will be leaving with so many contrasting reports stating if he is going or staying.

Clement Rangers

That uncertainty certainly brings uncertainty in whether Rangers will be strengthening in the position before the transfer deadline but what is very clear, is that manager Philippe Clement will need upgrades in the role very soon.
