Rangers transfer news as interest shown in Leicester City man Luke Thomas for late January deal

Rangers are showing interest in Leicester City left-back Luke Thomas, according to the Daily Mail.

Philippe Clement is said to be keen to add another option in the full-back position due to doubts over the future of Ridvan Yilmaz, while Borna Barisic is out of contract at the end of the season.

Consequently, the Mail reported in its print edition on Wednesday (24 January, page 67) that the Glasgow giants are keeping tabs on Englishman Thomas, 22, for a deadline-beating move.

Not sure on this one

It is absolutely true that left-back is looking like a problem area for Rangers that they could do with solving before the end of the window because they can ill-afford shortfalls in the second half of the season.

What will happen with Yilmaz is anyone’s guess. It looks like he is pretty keen to leave to ensure he can make Turkey’s squad for Euro 2024, and that would leave Barisic as the only senior option in the squad.

But Thomas does not exactly scream an exciting option. The 22-year-old spent the first half of this season on loan at Sheffield United in the Premier League, making 12 top-flight appearances but struggling for form before having his loan terminated.

He fits the profile in terms of age and resale value I guess, but it feels like there are probably better options out there that Clement can explore and this feels a little bit of a non-starter. But if it is something Rangers want to pursue then in Clement we trust.

In other Rangers news, Mohamed Diomande is reportedly due to arrive in Glasgow on Wednesday.
