John Collins stunned by what ‘tremendous’ Rangers ace Rabbi Matondo did in first half v Hibernian

John Collins was left stunned by Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo after what he did during the first half of the SPFL clash with Hibernian on Wednesday night.

The Welsh winger got the nod at left wing in the absence of Abdallah Sima and almost got an assist early on when he ghosted past young Kanayochukwu Megwa and put a ball in the box for Fabio Silva, who narrowly missed the target from six-yards out.

And speaking on commentary while live on BBC Sportsound, (07:56pm, 24 Jan), Liam McLeod praised the run of the former Manchester City youngster before Collins’ reaction.

“A cross first time to Fabio Silva who met it cleanly enough but it was just off target,” McLeod said. “But that was all about Rabbi Matondo down this side.”

“Tremendous play, really positive, wants to get to the byline,” Collins said.

“Megwa will be disappointed that he went with his wrong foot. He should’ve gone with his right foot.”

Talent

There is no doubting that Matondo is an exceptionally talented winger and suits the way that Philippe Clement wants to play, but his biggest issue is the consistency and fitness required to play at the top level.

His dribbling and pace make him a genuine threat against all opponents when there is space in behind, and this run was a glimpse of the talent he has against teams defending in a deeper block.

Clement Rangers

But his injuries have been a huge issue since he joined the club and it’s often not only cost him a place in the team, but had people questioning his future at the club.

This is now the perfect opportunity for him to step up and prove that he belongs at this level and can make an impact with Sima ruled out for up to three months following thigh surgery.

If he can continue to perform to this level then it shouldn’t be such an issue for Rangers and Clement. There is a player there and it’s down to Clement to find him.
