BBC Sportsound stunned by what Jack Butland did in Rangers 3-0 win v Hibernian – ‘How on earth?’
BBC Sportsound pundits were left stunned after Jack Butland’s heroic save to deny Hibernian as Rangers recorded a crucial 3-0 win at Easter Road on Wednesday.
Rangers eased to within five points of leaders Celtic on their return to Scottish Premiership action with a fifth straight victory over Hibernian (24 January).
Goals from Ridvan Yilmaz, Todd Cantwell and Cyriel Dessers ensured the Gers kept up their impressive record over Hibs in the league who are now without a win against them in 21 games.
Despite the goals, the Light Blues had Butland to thank for a heroic save from Myziane Maolida while the scores were at 2-0 – a goal which could have made it a nervy ending for Philippe Clement’s side.
And BBC Sportsound pundits Liam McLeod, John Collins and Kenny Miller were wowed by Butland’s saves (24 January, 08:58 pm)
McLeod said: “How on earth has Butland kept that one out? Still Hibs 0-2 Rangers.
Collins responded by saying: “May plays a superb ball down the line for Elie Youan, head up, makes the right decision.
“Terrific cutback and the ball should really be in the back of the net. Excellent save. Excellent.”
Former Ibrox icon Miller stated: “It’s a wonderful save, I mean the game isn’t gone if they can get the next goal, you can ask Rangers some questions and that was a wonderful opportunity.”
Stunning
Rangers were really comfortable all game at Easter Road as Clement saw his side keep up the pace with Celtic at the top of the table.
But this win and result is majorly impressive given the club’s recent record when they return from winter breaks but that just goes to show the impact the Belgian has made at Ibrox.
That impact has been shown through players who have been heavily criticised this season such as Dessers who grabbed a stunning goal and even Yilmaz who also hit an impressive strike for the first goal.
But it’s those regular stars that have taken their games up a notch and that is certainly evident in Butland who was absolutely superb to keep yet another clean sheet in his locker.
Had he not have saved Maolida’s chance, it could well been a nervy ending for the Light Blues but when you have a goalkeeper in fine form in between the sticks, you’re always in with a chance of keeping clean sheets which ultimately leads to three points.

A tremendous performance all round from the Gers magnificently helped by Butland’s heroics.
In other Rangers news, talks are reportedly at the final stages for a different player to depart Ibrox.
