Rangers make contact with FC Twente over Gjis Smal as new January transfer update emerges

Rangers have approached FC Twente over a potential January move to bring Gijs Smal to Ibrox this month, according to Voetbal International.

The Dutch outlet reported on Tuesday (23 January) that the Light Blues are interested in signing the 26-year-old left-back whose contract with the Eredivisie club is coming to an end at the end of the season.

Smal is debating extending his stay with Twente but has shown little intention of signing a long-term contract with the Dutch club and appears to be looking to move away from the club sooner rather than later amid interest from the Gers.

New left-back

Rangers and Philippe Clement are already short on options at left-back with only Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz at the Belgian’s disposal currently and it seems as though one, if not both, of the defenders could be nearing the Ibrox exit door.

Yilmaz has had plenty of interest during the January transfer window and looks set to jet away from Glasgow, while Barisic’s contract is up come the end of the season and there has been little suggestion that he will agree new terms.

Smal has been a good servant for FC Twente and impressed going forward for the Eredivisie side last season, picking up two goals and ten assists from left back in 44 matches. He hasn’t been as good this season as he has contended with injury and fitness issues.

But if the Light Blues are able to get him fit and healthy in Glasgow, he could be an incredibly helpful option for the remainder of the season, especially because Rangers are so desperate for new options in that position.

This feels like it could be a deal to watch in the remaining days of the window.
