David Edgar shares new Abdallah Sima Brighton return verdict as Rangers injury news emerges

David Edgar has admitted that he expects Rangers forward Abdallah Sima to return to Brighton to complete his recovery after picking up an injury during the African Cup of Nations.

Philippe Clement confirmed on Tuesday (23 January) that the Senegal international, who has 10 goals in 20 Scottish Premiership appearances, is set for a “long-term” spell on the sidelines having returned early from the AFCON.

While the suggestion had been that Sima would remain at Ibrox to undertake his recovery [Joshua Barrie, 22 January] Heart & Hand host Edgar believes that the 22-year-old will return to the south coast as he returns to full fitness.

Writing on the Heart & Hand Podcast’s X account on Tuesday (23 January) he said: “I’d expect Brighton would want his recovery conducted by their own medical team aye.”

Could be all over

It had seemed almost certain that Sima would remain in Glasgow to carry out the remainder of his rehab but following this latest update from Edgar, it no longer seems quite as cut and dry.

It would make sense for Sima to remain at Ibrox as the Rangers medical staff and coaches know how the 22-year-old operates and how to get the best out of him, but ultimately he is a Brighton player and therefore they will likely have the final say.

A parent club are always keen to take charge of a loanee’s rehab as they want to ensure that everything is done completely correctly to prevent a player from being rushed back into action or even picking up a new injury.

Hopefully, Sima will pull on a Rangers shirt again and remain a Gers player until the end of his loan spell at least, but his future at Ibrox is currently hanging in the balance and it isn’t clear what it holds for both the forward and the Light Blues.
