Barry Ferguson shares ‘interesting’ Mohamed Diomande verdict in new Rangers transfer admission

Barry Ferguson has offered his verdict on Rangers’ potential January signing of Mohamed Diomande, admitting that he was impressed by the midfielder’s highlight reel when watching him on YouTube.

Reports emerged that the Light Blues are closing in on their second signing of the January transfer window, with Diomande set to make the permanent switch to Ibrox in the coming days after the move was held up by Storm Isha [Chris Jack, 22 January].

While Ferguson admitted that he doesn’t know too much about the 22-year-old midfielder, having watched a few compilations of his performances he believes that he has the ability to thrive in the Gers’ midfield.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (22 January, 3:20) he said: “When I knew that it was probably going to be happening yesterday, as you do, you go onto YouTube and you have a look and listen, everybody can look good on YouTube but certainly from the highlights he looked like he’s got something about him.

“He’s certainly a player that the manager knows and fancies so it will be interesting to see if that gets done in the next couple of days.”

Has something about him

Rangers needed to add an extra dimension to their midfield during the January transfer window, especially with the consistent injury woes of Nicolas Raskin, Jose Cifuentes and Ryan Jack so far this season in the middle of the park.

For much of the campaign so far, Clement has only had John Lundstram as a recognised central midfielder available to him, so he will be excited to add Diomande to his ranks ahead of the second half of the Scottish Premiership season.

Whether or not the 21-year-old will become an immediate fixture at the heart of Rangers’ side remains to be seen, but the Ivorian midfielder has the potential to make a real difference at Ibrox, should he manage to hit the ground running.

Hopefully, he isn’t just a YouTube highlights reel player and can deliver consistently for 90 minutes, if so, he will have a big role to play between now and the end of the campaign.
