Sky Sports journalist shares new Rangers title verdict as ‘in control’ Celtic claim made

There is “no doubt” that Rangers are back in the race for the league title, according to Sky Sports journalist Alison Conroy.

The Ibrox club currently sit in second place in the Scottish Premiership table, eight points behind league leaders Celtic.

The former do, however, have two games in hand over their fierce rivals, but the latter do have a better goal difference.

“Celtic remain in control of their title defence as victory over Rangers in the last Old Firm game saw momentum swing back to the east end of Glasgow,” Conroy wrote for Sky Sports.

“Several members of Brendan Rodgers’ squad know what it takes to get over the line, as does the manager himself who won back-to-back league titles during his first spell in Glasgow.

“There is no doubt Rangers are back in the title race, but you can’t underplay the experience Rodgers and his squad have.”

Key period

Rangers were well behind their enemies at one stage this season, but a superb run under Philippe Clement has the club back in the race for number one spot.

The Ibrox club struggled in the early stages of the season under Michael Beale, but Clement has come in and done a fine job, not only in the league, but also in various other competitions.

The Belgian has sent the Gers into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup, but more importantly has helped them lift the League Cup trophy and has guided them into the next round of the Europa League.

The progression in Europe came despite a very tough group, with the Gers at one point looking very likely of exiting the competition.

Rangers

But that scare is over, with the manager and his players now able to focus on the task at hand in the league for the next few weeks at least.

Their quest to topple Celtic begins with trips to Hibernian and St Mirren on Wednesday (24 January) and Saturday (27 January) respectively.

In other Rangers news, a player has informed the club he wants to leave Ibrox, with continuous talks held.
