Rangers news: Update emerges on Kilmarnock legend James Fowler Ibrox move

Kilmarnock legend James Fowler is now the frontrunner to join Rangers and take over as the head of academy recruitment, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper outlet reported on its website on 22 January that the club have recently restructured their academy and Fowler is wanted to spearhead their academy signings.

He has managed Queen of South and has also been the assistant manager at St Mirren and Sunderland previously.

Good move

Fowler spent the majority of his playing days at Kilmarnock, making over 400 appearances for the club and captaining the team.

He also had spells with Bristol City and Queen of the South before transitioning into coaching and administrative roles and is now set for arguably his biggest behind-the-scenes job.

This undoubtedly is a strategic move for Rangers as his wealth of experience in football operations at Kilmarnock, coupled with coaching roles at St Mirren and Sunderland, demonstrates his understanding of player development and recruitment.

With a solid playing career and a diverse coaching background, Fowler brings valuable insights to enhance Gers’ academy structure, aligning with the club’s commitment to nurturing and recruiting top talent for future success.

Given how much emphasis the club puts on being self sustainable, having quality academy players that fetch seven and eight-figure transfer fees certainly will go a long way towards achieving their financial targets.

In other Rangers news, clubs have now made contact with Gers as another first-team player appears set to be leaving the club soon.
