Rangers: John Bennett and James Bisgrove under ‘major’ pressure at Ibrox

John Bennett and James Bisgrove are under “major” pressure to get Rangers “challenging for silverware”, according to Gary Keown.

Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (21 January, pages 94/95) Keown has described arrivals at Ibrox in the coming days as a “necessity.”

Keown wrote, “Make no mistake, they are under major, major pressure now to get this club working properly and challenging for silverware.

“Meaningful signings in the coming days would be a start. Indeed, they are a necessity. True, there have been some alterations over their time in charge. There’s a recruitment director in place in Nils Koppen.

“Medical and scouting have been identified as requiring change. New expectations have been placed on a rejigged youth department which has, clearly, offered nothing other than Ross McCausland to Clement as an option for the first team. However, it doesn’t take much to deduce that more has to improve.”

Rangers

Spot on

The Gers brought plenty of players to the club last summer when Michael Beale was still in charge, but a fair few of them have struggled to impress so far during their time in Scotland.

Philippe Clement has enjoyed a positive first few months in charge of the club, leading them to the UEFA Europa League Round of 16, while they also sit eight points behind leaders Celtic with two games in hand, which could see them reduce the gap to just two points.

However, supporting the Belgian in the transfer market will be key, and Keown is right to suggest that those higher up at the club, such as Bennett and Bisgrove, are under pressure to support their manager.

Clement has so far proven that he is worth financial backing, and it is up to the senior figures at Ibrox to now deliver that particular backing.

If they can successfully do that, the Gers could find themselves in a very strong position to push Celtic all the way this year.

In other Rangers news, Clement has issued a new update on a player linked with an exit from the club.
