Back to the drawing board for Rangers as Fabrizio Romano names winner in race for Emmanuel Dennis

It looks as if Rangers might have missed an opportunity with Emmanuel Dennis now set to return to Watford.

Philippe Clement is in need of a striker at Ibrox, although it appears that one of his targets for that position might soon become unavailable after Fabrizio Romano provided a transfer update via his official X account on Monday evening (22 January).

Dennis, who is currently on loan from Premier League side Nottingham Forest with Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey, is now set to return to his former side Watford on loan for the rest of the season, with a medical booked on Tuesday 23 January.

As per Romano, the forward has taken a 70 per cent pay cut to make the move back to England, suggesting how desperate he was to leave Turkey where he had played 333 minutes of football since making the move abroad.

It looks as if Dennis was willing to do whatever it took to find a new club, meaning Rangers missed out on a potentially easy deal to complete.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported via his official X account earlier this month (5 January) that Dennis was interested in a move to Scotland, but the Gers failed to make an official approach.

It now looks as if Rangers took too long to make their move, with the club now set to miss out, which will leave Clement feeling frustrated as he continues to search for reinforcements at the top end of the pitch.

As Mark Benstead reported live on Sky Sports News from outside Tynecastle on Monday (22 January, 10:39 am), the Light Blues continue to have an interest in striker Lawrence Shankland, who has a deal at Tynecastle until June 2025.

Benstead said: “It’s our understanding that there’s an interest in the player from Rangers.”

Supporters of the Glasgow giants will hope they can now wrap up a move for Shankland after missing out on Dennis.

In other Rangers news, continuous talks are being held with one player who has revealed he wants to leave the club.
