Tam McManus tips Rangers to make move for Hearts star Lawrence Shankland in January

Tam McManus has tipped Rangers to make a move to sign Lawrence Shankland before the transfer window closes after he was offered a new deal by Hearts.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (20 January), the pundit was reacting to news that the striker was left out of Hearts’ squad for their cup game victory over Spartans.

And McManus believes that there is no chance the 28-year-old pens a new deal with the club and expects him to be sold at some point in 2024, with Rangers frontrunners for his signature.

“Don’t think there is any chance of Shankland signing a new deal at Hearts,” he wrote.

“This is his opportunity to land the last big contract of his career. So they have to sell him either this month or in the summer to get good money.

“I’d expect Rangers to test the water this month.”

Needed

It may seem on paper like Rangers have a host of options to get goals this season, but the injury news for Danilo that has recently come out means the team is definitely light.

Sam Lammers has left less than six months after joining, Danilo is out until the last weeks of the season, Kemar Roofe is unavailable more than he isn’t, Cyriel Dessers is poor despite his recent upturn in form and Fabio Silva is an unknown quality.

With Abdallah Sima away for a while at the African Cup of Nations too there is a real shortage of goals in the team, and Shankland would no doubt solve that issue.

He has scored regularly at Hearts over the years and knows the league well, so it’s only fair to expect more goals from him when he’s playing in a team that is more dominant and full of better players.

It won’t be easy to do but crazier things have happened in football and there is still time for Rangers to get a deal done, so it’s one to watch before the deadline on February 1st.
