BBC pundit: Robby McCrorie let down despite Rangers win v Dumbarton after ‘horrific’ verdict on Sportscene

Robby McCrorie will be “disappointed” with the manner in which Rangers conceded against Dumbarton, according to Neil McCann.

Rangers progressed into the next round of the Scottish Cup with a routine 4-1 win at The Rock on Saturday (20 January).

Matthew Shiels pulled a goal back late on for the hosts with a glancing header to make it 3-1 at that point, before Scott Wright killed things off.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene [20 January, 10m 46s], host Jonathan Sutherland described the conditions as “horrific”.

In reply to that, and the goal scored by Shiels, McCann added: “It’s a very clever finish because he knows he has to get the slightest of touches.

“Rangers will be disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet, Robby McCrorie in particular.”

Job done

Failing to keep a clean sheet against fourth-tier opposition is of course disappointing, especially with the goal coming so late in the contest.

The Gers players were guilty of switching off with the job effectively done, although full credit must go to Shiels for the quality of the header.

That said, a three-goal margin of victory still made for a good day’s work for Rangers as they returned to action from the winter break with a win.

Rangers

The good news is that the game went ahead as planned despite the poor conditions, thus preventing a fixture backlog in the coming weeks.

This proved to be a good run-out for the players ahead of tougher games ahead, including the trip to Hibernian on Wednesday (24 January).

Rangers are pretty much in ‘must win’ mode in pursuit of Celtic from this point on, so fingers crossed for all three points in midweek.

In other Rangers news, Stevie Clifford has made an “absolutely desperate” admission over the Gers’ transfer activity this month.
