Tam McManus reacts as Rangers transfer news emerges over new left-back

Tam McManus believes that signing Josh Doig was too costly for Rangers as they look to ramp up their pursuit of a new left-back.

Ridvan Yilmaz has been linked with the exit door and Borna Barisic’s contract too expires at the end of the season, which means he’s free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with international clubs.

The Times reported on Friday, 19 January, that Doig appeared set to complete a move to Marseille instead of Ibrox.

McManus told PLZ’s Football Show at 14:38: “Rangers under Philippe Clement are far more impressive than they were under Michael Beale so it could be that one or two good signings could get you that £60million bounty at the end of the season.

“I think they will need a left back. There was rumoured interest in Josh Doig but that fee was out of Rangers’ reach. I think he’s going to go for £5million so that’s not happening.”

Act quickly

Rangers’ pursuit of players like Doig demonstrates their ambition and intent to strengthen the squad, marking a positive trajectory under Clement.

The reported interest in Doig, despite the deal potentially falling through due to financial constraints, signifies the club’s commitment to securing top talent.

However, Gers must persist in their pursuit of a new left-back even if Yilmaz stays.

The impending expiry of Barisic’s contract as well makes the left-back position a priority.

A solid left-back is crucial for a well-rounded team, providing defensive stability and contributing to the attack so an attack-minded option is likely to be Clement’s priority.

Continuing their search for defensive reinforcements ensures that Rangers maintain depth and competitiveness throughout the season.

As things stand, they’re maybe a couple of signings away from being at Celtic’s level and getting that left-back may go a long way towards securing title number 56.

In other Rangers news, a £4.8million bid update has emerged as development occurs in Gers’ quest to seal a January signing.
