BBC Sport pundit shares Tommy Conway transfer verdict as next Jamie Vardy would cost Rangers ‘millions’
Carlton Palmer has offered his verdict on Bristol City striker Tommy Conway, suggesting the forward would cost “millions” to sign amid interest from Rangers and Celtic.
The 21-year-old has scored six goals in 20 Championship matches this season and a further two in the FA Cup, both of which came against Premier League opposition in West Ham, but is entering the final 18 months of his contract at Ashton Gate.
While BBC Sport pundit Palmer believes it would be best for the Scottish youth international’s development if he remained in the Championship, he thinks it would take a lot of money to sign the forward who he “likened to Jamie Vardy”.
Speaking to Football League World (20 January) he said: “Celtic, Rangers, Nottingham Forest and Wolves are but a few of the clubs monitoring Bristol City’s talented young striker, Tommy Conway.
“The Scottish under-21 international has enhanced his growing reputation by scoring goals in the two FA Cup third-round clashes with West Ham, proving he can mix it with the very highest level.
“Conway has been likened to Jamie Vardy in the way he plays, high measures indeed. As we have repeatedly said, to continue education and development as a young player you need to keep playing.
“It’s hard to put a price on this young man, but we are talking in the millions if he continues progressing in the manner and rate he is currently.”
Millions
Rangers need a new number nine this January and it is only natural that they have found themselves linked with a young Scottish talent who is excelling south of the border, especially after a couple of impressive displays against West Ham.
However, any potential deal for Conway is likely to be expensive as Bristol City have no interest in selling one of their most prized academy assets, especially halfway through a season where they’re hoping to make a late push for the playoff places.

Whether or not Rangers would be interested in paying a multimillion pound fee for the 21-year-old anyway remains to be seen, especially considering that he has yet to play at the top level of English football, never featuring above the Championship.
Whether or not this move becomes any more than the latest striker linked with a switch to Ibrox remains to be seen, but it could be one to address in the summer rather than this month.
