Transfer update shared on Rangers pursuit of Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt

Rangers will not be signing Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt on loan this month, according to a report by Yorkshire Evening Post.

Writing on their website (19 January), the news outlet report that the striker does not expect to be allowed to leave Elland Road before the February 1st deadline.

But even if that changes a loan move to Glasgow can’t happen currently as it would count as an international loan and Leeds don’t have any more spots available to sanction that move.

“Gelhardt’s camp are under the impression that there is currently ‘no chance’ the forward moves out on loan during the January transfer window and in any case, a temporary stint with either Rangers or Celtic is impossible because it would count as an international loan and Leeds cannot sanction any more of those,” they wrote.

No bother

As much as Gers fans are desperate to see new faces coming into Ibrox to strengthen the squad, nobody will be losing sleep about not signing Gelhardt.

The 21-year-old has barely featured at Elland Road this season and finds himself way down the pecking order for the Championship side, so it would be quite a shock if he came to Ibrox and made an impact as a member of the starting team.

Fabio Silva has already bolstered the striker area in the squad and even he has struggled for game time this season, so it seems unlikely we’d be bringing in another forward in a similar mould so soon.

There are other areas of the squad that should be seen as a priority, like central midfield and left-back, and the club’s attentions should be put towards that in the final two weeks of the window.

It’s a shame yes, but not a big deal. At least Rangers fans can stop paying this rumour attention now.
