Rangers: Ben Davies behind schedule in injury recovery amid Philippe Clement update

Philippe Clement has confirmed that Rangers defender Ben Davies is still injured and is behind schedule in his recovery from injury issues.

Speaking in his post-game press conference after the 2-2 friendly draw with Copenhagen at Ibrox (16 January), the boss was asked for an update on the central defender after he didn’t feature.

And Clement confirmed that he was supposed to return to training this week but that hasn’t happened and there is no timeline for his return currently.

“He is still injured,” he said.

“He’s working individually with the physios but he’s not there yet to train with the group. I expected him back this week but it’s not the case.

“The medical staff work with the players and some recover really fast, others a little bit slower.”

Same old

When Ben Davies joined the club in the summer of 2022 we all felt it was a good signing but there were issues with his injury record.

That has all proven to be correct, with the defender probably missing more games than he’s actually been available for and most people feeling that he is fourth-choice at this stage.

Clement loves the pairing of Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun, and John Souttar is a more than good enough back-up option.

It’s still a big issue that he’s always injured though because we spent a fair chunk of money on him to replace Calvin Bassey and we’ve never been able to really establish a solid pairing since then.

It may be best to move him on in the summer, but a real overhaul of the medical department needs to happen. For now though, we’re fine without Davies despite his injury issues taking longer to fix themselves than anticipated.
