Multi-million windfall on cards after what Rangers and Celtic have done

A multi-million-pound windfall is now on the cards with £6million set to be shared between SPFL clubs after Rangers and Celtic reached last season’s Champions League group stage, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported in their print edition [17 January, back page] that nine clubs will benefit from the windfall in a “huge bonus”, with UEFA distributing cash through clubs who fail to qualify for their competitions.

It is also said that solidarity payments for Scottish clubs will rise to £1million each next season as a result of Celtic’s qualification for the group stages of this season’s Champions League.

Rangers

Qualification benefits more than just those who achieve it

Champions League qualification is always top of the list of goals behind the scenes at both Celtic and Rangers before the start of every season, not just because of the prestige of playing in the biggest competition, but also because of the financial benefits it brings.

According to GOAL, the Champions League reward money for the 2022/23 season saw teams receive £13.4million just for qualifying for the group stage and £2.4million for every group stage win.

That number then rose as the tournament went on, with teams receiving £8.2million in the last 16, £9.1million in the quarter-final, £10.7million in the semi-final, £13.3million for making the final and the top prize of £17.2million.

Rangers

The money available in the competition makes it vital for Rangers and Celtic as it dwarfs any rewards from any other competition, including the SPFL TV money, but due to the latest news with the money set to trickle down, their involvement in the CL benefits the whole of Scotland.
