Celtic defender Carter-Vickers transfer admission made Rangers eye SPFL title

Graeme McGarry believes Celtic must keep a hold of Cameron Carter-Vickers if they are to beat Rangers to the title.

The Glasgow Evening Times journalist believes that there will be a mutiny at Celtic Park if the former Tottenham Hotspur defender is sold in January.

He joined the Hoops from Tottenham back in 2022 and has become an important first team player since then.

McGarry wrote: “You can argue all day, and no doubt we will all summer, whether a move to the likes of West Ham, Brentford or Nottingham Forest can offer Carter-Vickers more than what he can get at Celtic beyond the contents of his pay packet. It will be a case of weighing up the attraction of a higher level of competition on a weekly basis versus the chance to have another crack at Europe’s elite.

“But from Celtic’s point of view, the only thing that matters right now is that their lead at the top of the Premiership table could potentially be whittled down to two points if Rangers win their games in hand. They have an infinitely better chance of keeping their city rivals at bay with Carter-Vickers in their team.

“Sell him in the summer, and sure, there will be disappointment from the Celtic fans. Sell him now, and there will be mutiny.”

Not enough

While retaining key players like Carter-Vickers is crucial for Celtic’s stability and competitive edge, Rangers cannot solely depend on their rivals’ potential weaknesses.

To secure sustained success and enhance their own prospects, they must make strategic investments in the transfer market.

Gers must consider the long-term goals and build a squad capable of competing domestically and in European competitions.

A comprehensive and strategic approach to player acquisitions, taking into account the team’s style of play and areas for improvement, will contribute to the club’s overall success.

While exploiting Celtic’s vulnerabilities may offer short-term advantages, Rangers must focus on their own squad development and investments to establish a sustained competitive advantage.

The league is too close to call right now and the results of the Old Firm derbies may be what separate the two sides at the end of the season.
